Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Determine job requirements
  2. Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times
  3. Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with SOPs
  4. Identify job requirements from specifications, drawings, job sheets or work instructions
  5. Prepare materials for MMAW
  6. Assemble/align materials to specification, where required
  7. Select, assemble and set up welding equipment and consumables
  8. Assemble and set up AC or DC welding equipment
  9. Minimise and rectify distortion
  10. Rectify any distortion using appropriate techniques
  11. Weld to job specification using MMAW
  12. Clean joints to specifications
  13. Ensure weld conformance
  14. Rectify any weld defects with minimum loss of sound metal using correct techniques and tools
  15. Complete weld records, where required

fillet and butt welds carried out in all positions

alloys suitable for MMAW welding

Preparation of materials includes one (1) or more of the following:

pre-heating

setting up of jigs

fixtures and clamps

joint preparation (e.g. bevelling)

Distortion prevention measures include one (1) or more of the following:

preheating

setting up of jigs

fixtures and clamps

Rectify includes the use of one or more of the following:

oxy acetylene

air arc equipment

grinding devices

Defects include one (1) or more of the following:

porosity

slag inclusions

discontinuities

lack of penetration

undercut
